Alexander Volkanovski barely had time to celebrate his win over Diego Lopes before Lerone Murphy jumped in with the callout. The champion accepted on the spot, seemingly locking in his next defense. Murphy looked like the obvious choice moving forward. But David Onama threw a wrench in those plans ahead of UFC Vegas 110. He thinks Youssef Zalal deserves the shot instead of Murphy

Onama, who will headline the UFC Fight Night, had his answer ready when the Volkanovski question came up. Zalal is the guy he wants to see get that shot, and the resume backs it up. An 18-5-1 record with no losses since 2021 tells that he’s been on a serious run.

In his words, “I know a guy, I can’t picture his name. Hold on. They call him ‘The Moroccan Devil…I think it’s a good matchup.”

His recent wins over Josh Emmett and Calvin Kattar stand out especially. Those aren’t just names – they’re legitimate top contenders who were ranked when Zalal beat them. Getting past guys like that proves he belongs in championship conversations.

That unbeaten streak since 2021 is hard to ignore. Multiple years without a loss in the featherweight division, beating ranked opponents along the way, builds an undeniable case for a title eliminator at minimum. Meanwhile, Volkanovski seems to want Movsar Evolve next.

Volkanovski revealed that he had been trying to make the fight with Movsar Evloev happen, believing Movsar had earned the title shot and deserved to be next in line. He wanted that matchup and pushed for it behind the scenes. However, it’s not coming together.

He said, “I tried making Movsar fight happen; I thought he deserved it. He did deserve it. It doesn’t look like it’s gonna be Movsar.”

For various reasons, including Movsar pulling out multiple times, injuries, or timing issues, the fight now appears to be dead. Volkanovski confirmed it’s not happening, which opens the door for Lerone Murphy to step in.
