“Billy Napier Effect”: Fans Torch Head Coach as JMU Loses Its Entire Offense
James Madison pulled off a fairy tale 2025 season, and it’s burning to the ground before anyone can blink. CFB Alerts posted the carnage on Instagram on Sunday, and the numbers are staggering as Billy Napier takes over the helm. Every offensive starter from the Dukes’ playoff run is gone. Not most of them. All 11.
On3 reports the defensive roster got wrecked, too. Aiden Gobaira, a redshirt junior defensive end who played all 14 games and posted 38 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 4.0 sacks, entered the portal Sunday.
Fans had plenty of thoughts. None of them is good for Billy Napier.
One fan nailed it in three words. “billy napier affect”
Another went full sarcasm. “Let Napier cook”
This user wasn’t shocked. “No surprise their coach left”
One fan dragged his Florida days. “They seen that explosive billy Napier offense coming 🤣🤣🤣”
Another kept it blunt. “Not a good look at all…”
This user asked the obvious question. “Is this sustainable?”
One predicted the future. “Billy ain’t bringing em back ahahha”
And this fan sent mock encouragement. “Have fun Billy Napier😂”
Nobody’s giving Napier the benefit of the doubt. His Florida run crashed and burnt. Now he’s walking into a dumpster fire at a Group of Five school.
Billy Napier Rehires the Same Staff That Tanked at Florida
The Dukes finished 12-2 and crashed the College Football Playoff party for the first time ever. Seven days after Oregon bounced them in the first round, head coach Bob Chesney packed his bags for UCLA.
Napier’s first moves at JMU should terrify anyone who watched his Gainesville disaster. He brought Robert Bala in as defensive coordinator. Bala coached linebackers at Florida this year. Before that, his only DC gig was at FCS Southern Utah in 2021. They went 1-10 that season and surrendered 30-plus points in eight games, including a 62-0 finale.
William Peagler got hired as the running backs coach. He was Florida’s tight ends coach in 2022 and worked as an offensive analyst in 2025. Peagler’s been coaching since 2010, but he has only had two years of actual coaching running backs.
Rob Sale joining as offensive line coach might be the most telling hire. Sale ran Florida’s offensive line under Napier. He wasn’t the worst coach on staff, but he couldn’t land top recruits or build consistent depth.
The transfer portal opens Jan. 2. Napier gets a 15-day sprint to patch together a roster. JMU supposedly built solid NIL backing for a Group of Five program.
