There was a welcome sight at Team Canada practice on Friday. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin was back on the ice, and that alone was enough to get fans talking. The 34-year-old superstar has been out since suffering a lower-body injury early in Canada’s preliminary round game against Czechia. Since then, she has missed two games – a tough 5-0 loss to the United States and a strong 5-0 bounce-back win over Finland to close the group stage.

Now, with the knockout rounds here, the timing of her return to practice feels important. Canada faces Germany in the quarterfinal, and having their captain even close to ready would be a big boost.

Canada would obviously love to have her back. This is Poulin’s fifth Olympic Games, and she has built a reputation as one of the biggest clutch performers in hockey history. She scored the gold medal-winning goal for Canada in 2010, 2014, and 2022.

Encouraging Signs as Poulin Tests Her Injury at Practice

In a video shared by CBC Olympics reporter Claire Hanna, Poulin was among the first players to step onto the ice during the session. She cautiously tested her right leg at the start, clearly easing herself back into movement. As practice continued, she took part in light passing and shooting drills, showing encouraging signs.

However, there is still no official confirmation that she will return immediately. Hanna noted that Poulin remains day-to-day. She is expected to undergo another medical assessment on Saturday, before the quarterfinal matchup against Germany, to determine whether she is ready to play.

The veteran forward will be keen to return to the ice as she is also chasing history. Poulin sits just one goal shy of tying Hayley Wickenheiser for the women’s Olympic record of 17 career goals. A return in the knockout round would give her a chance not only to help Canada chase another medal, but also to add another milestone to her career.

For now, Team Canada remains cautious. The focus is on making sure their captain is fully ready before stepping back into game action. But seeing Poulin back on the ice, even in a limited role, is enough to spark optimism.
