When many fans hoped to live a party on the very day that Azteca Stadium would reopen its doors, a tragedy occurred. The Mexico national team hosted the Portugal squad, one of the favorites to win the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

After several years of renovations, one of the most iconic stadiums in the world saw its national team again, but the game wasn’t exempt from controversy. The game ended in a goalless tie, but the lack of scores wasn’t the biggest story of the night.

Before kick-off, a fan fell from the stands and lost his life, Goal reported. Shortly before the start, a fan fell from the stadium’s VIP stand and landed in the car park. The Touchline reported that the fan, under the influence of alcohol, tried to jump from the second to the first level in the stadium.

Azteca Stadium will become the first stadium in history to host three FIFA World Cup games. It did so in 1970 and 1986. Authorities confirmed that the fan lost his life and announced they launched an investigation into the tragedy.

“The Mexico City Public Prosecutor’s Office (Fiscalía CDMX) expresses its deep regret at the death of a person that occurred on Saturday 28 March inside the Banorte Stadium, prior to the start of the Mexican national team’s friendly match.

“Furthermore, analysis of footage from the stadium’s surveillance cameras and those at its entrances is currently underway, as is the collection of statements from those present at the scene, in order to accurately reconstruct the sequence of events and determine any liability.

“Similarly, the post-mortem examination required by law is currently being carried out to establish with certainty the cause of death, as well as the individual’s physical condition at the time of the fall.

“The Mexico City Public Prosecutor’s Office will continue its investigations in depth and will keep the public informed of any significant developments, in strict compliance with the principles of due process.”

Mexico has been involved in controversy regarding the World Cup in recent months. Fans hoped to leave that in the past and focus on the upcoming tournament. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the fan’s family and loved ones.
