The Boston Celtics’ Game 7 nightmare was already written before tipoff. Jayson Tatum was sidelined with stiffness in his left knee, ruled out just 90 minutes before the showdown against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics scrambled to adjust, leaning on a patchwork lineup in a do-or-die postseason clash. The result was a tough 109-100 loss.

Philadelphia, seeded No. 7, clawed back from a 3-1 series deficit to topple the East’s No. 2 seed, a feat only 14 teams in NBA history have managed. Joel Embiid led the charge with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists, while Tyrese Maxey added a monster 30-point, 11-rebound, seven-assist performance. The 76ers’ win was sweet revenge after Boston’s Game 7 blowout of Philly in the 2023 playoffs.

The postgame scene, though, turned chaotic as cameras captured Celtics fans venting frustration over Tatum’s absence. A fan vented out, saying,

“Say that, it’s your fault, bro! It’s your fault. That’s what you see to do. You’re the reason we lost, you couldn’t pay, you couldn’t buy! Go to f***ng plane, no!”

With a retooled starting five, Boston fell behind early and couldn’t recover, leaving Philly to celebrate, and Boston fans left shaking their heads.

Why Jayson Tatum’s Minutes Sparked Controversy?

Tatum’s playoff grind has raised eyebrows. Having missed most of the regular season rehabbing a ruptured Achilles, he logged massive minutes, 39, 42, 35, and 41 in three of the first five games against Philadelphia. Game 6 left him sidelined with a lower leg issue, forcing Boston to rethink its lineup. To that, Bill Simmons tweeted:

“Will never understand this. Made no sense as it was happening.”

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla insisted Jayson Tatum would’ve played the fourth quarter if the game were close. Still, the roster shuffle flopped. First-time playoff starters Luka Garza, Baylor Scheierman, and Ron Harper Jr. all finished scoreless, marking a rare NBA first since 1970-71.

Boston’s blown 3-1 lead made them only the second team ever to lose a series after multiple 30+ point wins.
