Red Sox Rumors: Sonny Gray Emerges As Top Trade Candidate For Boston

The Boston Red Sox made several high-profile signings this winter to push the team forward after ending a four-year playoff drought last season. Sonny Gray was the chief addition to their pitching staff. The St. Louis Cardinals traded the veteran right-hander to rebuild their young team for the 2026 season.
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report listed Sonny Gray among the potential surprising trade candidates at the deadline later this summer. Gray has done a solid job for the Red Sox, but he has yet to find any real consistency in his performances thus far. Yet the three-time All-Star will have plenty of suitors lining up if the Red Sox want to trade him.
“Contending teams are always in need of starting pitching, though. If Gray—who is in the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $75 million contract—becomes available, he’ll garner interest,” Kelly stated.

The Cardinals traded Gray for the final season of a three-year, $75 million contract, although he had a $35 million salary in 2026. The Red Sox revoked it to a one-year, $31 million deal with a $10 million buyout on a club option.
Potential Stumbling Blocks If The Red Sox Trade Sonny Gray
There are quite a few obstacles in the way if the Boston Red Sox decide to offload Sonny Gray from their payroll. Nevertheless, he will have the final say in case any team comes forward to take up the remaining few months of his contract.

“There are a few factors that could limit his market. First of all, his 4.31 FIP does suggest he could see some regression moving forward. A bigger impediment is that the 36-year-old has a full no-trade clause in his contract. While he waived that to be dealt from the Cardinals to the Red Sox, would Gray be interested in moving again?” Kelly wrote.
Gray currently has a 3-1 record from his six starts for the Red Sox after returning from the IL last week. He pitched 28.2 innings with a 3.54 ERA and 1.286 WHIP while notching just 15 strikeouts.
