During the grueling 2016 trial, Erin Andrews had to relive the nightmare publicly and break down in tears on the witness stand amid the emotional fallout. Ultimately, the jury ruled in her favor, awarding her a $55 million verdict and holding the hotel legally accountable.
Andrews Says The Public Thought She Staged The Leak
During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Erin Andrews spoke candidly with host Alex Cooper about the peephole video. Andrews recounted the profound shock of discovering her 2009 illicit peephole video while backstage at the ESPY Awards.
She detailed the intense emotional toll and public scrutiny she faced, noting that the hostile media reaction and victim-blaming at the time left her fearing for her career.
“[The public thought] I did it to myself,” Andrews explained.
“That I was on the cover of newspapers, just a still frame of the video, my naked body, and it said, ‘ESPN scandal.’ People thought I did it to myself for publicity or to help my career, which was the exact opposite of how I was feeling. I was feeling shame, like I would never get work again; I would never be taken seriously. And it was perceived [as the opposite], which is so sad.”
Subsequently, she made a high-profile move to FOX Sports in 2012. She cemented her status as the lead sideline reporter for the network’s flagship NFL broadcasting team. Andrews achieved historic recognition in 2022 by becoming the first female recipient of the prestigious Pat Summerall Award.
She would not let that moment ruin her life.
