The sports world is mourning the tragic loss of former Team USA triathlete Spencer Korwin, who died at age 38 in an apparent drowning accident during a family vacation on Long Island.

Korwin had traveled to the Shelter Island area with his wife and children. Authorities found him dead underneath the dock at The Pridwin Hotel after he went into the Shelter Island Sound for a morning swim.

According to the New York Post, Korwin entered the water shortly before 8 a.m. He stayed at the luxury hotel with his family at the time.

His family later reported him missing when he didn’t return from the water. Search crews then began looking for him and eventually found his body underneath the dock.

Officials have not said what caused the apparent drowning. Conditions in the area appeared normal at the time.

“There wasn’t anything unusual,” Southold Town Police Department Marine One master John Kirincic told the Shelter Island Reporter. “There was no fog or anything bad.”

Still, authorities noted the risks of swimming in open water.

“These are open waters where tides, currents and boat traffic are always considerations,” Shelter Island Police Chief Jim Read said.

Korwin had built an impressive athletic career before his death. He represented the United States at the 2012 triathlon World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. He also spent five years as a sponsored Gatorade athlete.

Outside of competition, Korwin worked as a wellness entrepreneur and focused on his family life.

A GoFundMe shared after his death remembered him as a deeply loved member of his community.

“Spencer was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” the fundraiser said. “He was the sun around which so many of our lives orbited, and his loss is being felt deeply by everyone who knew and loved him.”

Korwin leaves behind his wife and two children. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
