The 49ers have spent all week bracing for bad news on defense, and they got it on Friday. San Francisco now heads into Sunday’s game against Arizona without one of its most important pieces up front in Nick Bosa.

The absence is extra significant, given his history with this exact opponent. He tore his ACL against these same Cardinals last September. This year’s calf issue then landed on top of a knee the team has monitored closely since training camp.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan only just raised serious concerns about the severity of the setback. Friday’s news confirmed exactly what she feared.

The 49ers have officially ruled Bosa out against the Cardinals, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He and ESPN’s Adam Schefter report that Bosa suffered a calf injury in practice and is now expected to miss multiple weeks.

While both insiders expect Bosa to miss several weeks rather than just Sunday’s matchup, the team hasn’t decided whether to place him on injured reserve.

That designation would guarantee a four-game absence no matter how quickly he heals. For now, San Francisco appears to be waiting on more information before committing either way.

The timing couldn’t be worse for a defense already searching for answers. Bosa has just seven tackles and no sacks through two games this season, so raw production isn’t really the issue.

What he provides instead is attention. His reputation alone forces opposing offenses to account for him on nearly every snap. Take him off the field, and that advantage disappears fast, right as Arizona gears up for a physical divisional matchup.

Calf Issues Add To Complicated Recovery

This is the first time the calf itself has forced Bosa out of a game.

The knee tells a separate story. It’s remained on the injury report since camp, when Bosa dealt with tendinitis that Kyle Shanahan downplayed as a normal part of ACL recovery. That earlier issue limited his practice reps, but it never once kept him out of a game. This week’s calf strain changed that. It layered a brand-new problem on top of a knee San Francisco was already managing with care.

Bosa has now torn his ACL twice in his career and missed extended stretches both times. Even so, the five-time Pro Bowler remains the most disruptive piece of San Francisco’s defensive front whenever he’s healthy. The 49ers ranked last in the league in sacks a season ago. Another lengthy absence would only deepen that problem as the schedule turns toward tougher opponents.

For now, San Francisco will lean on its depth and wait for clarity. The team’s next real update on Bosa likely won’t arrive until it makes a final call on injured reserve.
