With plenty of uncertainty surrounding Jonathan Taylor’s future in Indianapolis, the Colts continue to shuffle up their backfield.

Roughly 24 hours ahead of their week 3 battle against the Baltimore Ravens, the Colts made a shocking move by releasing their week 1 starting running back, Deon Jackson. And in Jackson’s place, the team promoted former 49ers and Eagles running back Trey Sermon.

With Taylor on IR and current starter Zack Moss still recovering from a broken arm, Jackson started week one and ran 13 times for 14 yards. He was equally inefficient in the passing game, reeling in five of six targets for just 14 yards. And worst of all, he lost two fumbles in a 31-21 loss to the Jaguars.

As for Sermon, the 24-year-old was creating plenty of buzz during training camp with the Eagles, but he couldn’t survive the final cuts on a Philly team with a ton of backfield depth. The 49ers’ third-round pick from 2021 will now try to make his mark in at the professional level with his third NFL team.

If Taylor’s time in Indy is truly over, this could be a massive opportunity for the former Ohio State star to earn significant snaps on offense.
