After getting crushed by the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night, the hype on the Colorado Buffaloes has dropped considerably.

Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes entered Saturday as a 21-point underdog. That line looks awfully generous in hindsight, seeing that the Ducks cruised to a 42-6 victory at Autzen Stadium. The Buffs’ lone score was a Michael Harrison TD pass from Shedeur Sanders that came in garbage time.

ESPN’s College Football Power Index computer projections now have Colorado finishing with 5.8 wins and 6.2 losses. These projections make good sense considering that the Buffaloes have four matchups against ranked teams, starting with Caleb Williams and the No. 8 ranked USC Trojans next Saturday.

The Buffaloes stunned the nation when they upset the TCU Horned Frogs, last year’s national championship runner-ups, 45-42 on the road in their season opener. That was followed by home wins over Nebraska and Colorado State, with the latter coming in overtime.

Saturday night was certainly a wake-up call for Sanders’ Buffaloes, but there is plenty of season left. They’ve already exceeded expectations with three wins in four games, already tripling last year’s win total.

Sanders came over to the Buffaloes following a three-year stint at Jackson State. The Pro Football Hall of Famer compiled a 27-6 record with the Tigers and led the club to consecutive SWAC Championships in 2021 and 2022.
