Mac Jones was benched for the second straight game on Sunday as the New England Patriots lost to the New Orleans Saints 34-0. Jones was 12-22 for 110 yards and two interceptions when he was pulled from the game in favor of Bailey Zappe.

It was the second-worst shutout loss in team history for New England. It also dropped the Patriots to 1-4 for the first time since 2000, Belichick’s first season in New England.

Jones had a pick-6 and also lost a fumble in the third quarter that was recovered by Cameron Jordan and set up a Saints’ field goal. He was replaced by backup Bailey Zappe in the fourth quarter. Things are expected to be different if Jones finds himself being benched for a third straight game.

The Patriots would likely turn toward the player who’s been their emergency third quarterback for the last three weeks, according to Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal.

“From talking to people around the team, I think, if Mac Jones doesn’t succeed this week, if he doesn’t retain his job, I think it’s Will Grier’s,” Bedard said during Tuesday’s “Felger & Mazz” episode on 98. The Sports Hub.

The 28-year-old was signed by New England last month. The West Virginia product spent the first two seasons of his career with the Carolina Panthers before spending the 2021 and 2022 campaigns with the Dallas Cowboys.

He began this season on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad before being poached by the Patriots.

He hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2019 with Carolina.
