Brittney Griner in Mercury uniform
COLLEGE PARK, GEORGIA – JULY 25: Brittney Griner #49 of the Phoenix Mercury during the game against the Atlanta Dream at Gateway Center Arena on July 25, 2023 in College Park, Georgia.

WNBA superstar Brittney Griner is set to describe her Russian ordeal in a tell-all documentary after striking a deal with Disney.

Griner’s imprisonment will be the subject of an ‘ESPN Films’ documentary, while the basketball icon will also sit down for an exclusive interview with ABC News’s Robin Roberts.

The feature will detail Griner’s arrest at a Moscow airport after she was found in possession of cannabis while returning to her Russian team, UMMC Ekaterinburg, in February of 2022.

The 33-year-old was sentenced to nine years in prison and was held in a Russian jail, where she was exposed to harsh treatment, and was unable to speak to her family for nearly a year.

“The last two years have been the most harrowing, transformative and illuminating period of my life, and I am grateful to be in a place now to share my story with the world,” Griner says. “I’m proud to partner with ESPN and Disney to share this very personal story because of its incredible potential to inspire hope around the world and their proven ability to do just that.”

The doc will also delve into the circumstances that prompted her to play overseas while still at the height of her game and reveal exclusive footage, recordings, and letters she sent and received during her incarceration.

The documentary, as well as a scripted series with ABC Signature, will be executively produced by Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife, longtime manager Lindsay Kagawa Colas, and Brillstein Entertainment co-CEO Jon Liebman.
