Brian Windhorst Warns Lakers Fans Not to “Freak Out” Over Luka Doncic Contract Situation

As Luka Doncic enjoys the offseason in Greece with NBA legend Michael Jordan, Lakers fans wonder when their star will sign his next contract. With training camp getting closer and EuroBasket just weeks away, the silence sparked concern. But ESPN’s Brian Windhorst says there is no reason to worry.
Doncic becomes eligible for a contract extension on August 2. Most expect the Lakers to offer him a four-year deal worth $229 million. However, reports suggest Doncic might prefer a shorter three-year contract worth $165 million with a player option. That setup would give him more control over future deals, especially after the major trade that sent him from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in February.
“Do not freak out if you do not hear from Luka contractually until September“, Windhorst added. “I would not expect it to happen that early. He’s playing for the Slovenian national team.” Doncic will compete for Slovenia in the EuroBasket tournament from August 27 to September 14, and he is likely to finalize his contract after that.

In his first season with the Lakers, Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists. The team appears ready to build around him as the league’s next face. Under new leadership, the Lakers will focus on youth development and start a new era for the franchise.
Brian Windhorst Talks About His Contract Extension With ESPN

Veteran NBA reporter Brian Windhorst revealed his ESPN contract ends after the 2024-25 season. He did not get any renewal talks further in the contract.
Speaking on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, Windhorst said, “I’ve been at ESPN for fifteen years. The company has been wonderful to me. And I would love to continue at ESPN. There’s no negotiations, so I can very simply say to you: there’s no negotiations. I would love to stay on if that works.“
Despite the unknowns, Windhorst remains focused on NBA coverage and is not worried. He added that ESPN contracts often follow the NBA calendar, with talks happening after the season.
After joining in 2019 to cover the Cleveland Cavaliers, Windhorst is now a regular on NBA Today and First Take. He could find new opportunities with outlets like Amazon or NBC, but until then, he is loving continuing his journey with ESPN.
