Golf isn’t always about quiet crowds and polite applause. At Bethpage Black, things can get wild, and this year’s Ryder Cup could be tougher than usual for Europe’s players. Former Ryder Cup star Andrew Coltart has even warned the players’ wives and girlfriends to be careful about showing up in New York.

The tournament tees off at 7:10 am next Friday, and everyone knows the Bethpage crowd loves their golf loud. The Americans cheer their heroes and don’t hold back when it comes to heckling opponents.Coltart has seen it all before, and he refuses to hide the reality for the players’ partners.

“Some of the other wives and girlfriends had been getting abuse from the crowd,” he recalled about the 1999 Ryder Cup. “It was just normal derogatory things that, unfortunately, you would expect from a group of blokes that probably had too much to drink.”

His warning came as Team Europe kept preparing for the tough crowd. Captain Luke Donald also made news recently with his strong comments about who might be in the galleries.

Coltart urged partners to watch from a safe spot instead of risking the chaos at Bethpage.

“It might not be a great idea to go out there and they can watch it from a room where it’s safe and secure,” he said. “As a player you deal with these things, but nobody wants their wife or partner to be abused.”

He added that no amount of crowd control will stop the jeers from reaching the families. The atmosphere, he said, can be unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. His words hit harder given Europe’s dominant win in Rome two years ago, which has already set the golf stage for an emotional American response on home soil.

The players, though, aren’t going in blind. Rory McIlroy revealed that the squad has been using virtual reality headsets to simulate the noise and hostility they’ll face in New York.

It simulates the sights and sounds and noise,” he explained after the BMW PGA Golf Championship. “That’s the stuff that we are going to have to deal with, so it’s better to try to desensitize yourself as much as possible before you get in there.

Europe’s captain isn’t leaving anything to chance, either. Earlier this year in Abu Dhabi, Luke Donald even hired a comedian to heckle Tyrrell Hatton during practice. The preparation deeply contrasted the approaches of the two, as USA captain Keegan Bradley reportedly brushed aside Donald Trump’s advice when selecting his squad.

With the countdown ticking, the golf will be world-class, but the sidelines may carry an edge few outside New York truly understand.
