LeBron James didn’t need words to tell the story Friday, as his reaction pretty much did the heavy lifting. During the Dallas Mavericks game, the Los Angeles Lakers star had one of those moments where the frustration bubbled right to the surface. And with AD on the opposite side now, every collision came with extra weight.

Dallas kept stuff tight all night, with King James literally cracking up the entire Mavs bench except for D’Angelo Russell. However, the Lakers controlled the fourth quarter and closed out a 129-119 win (via local broadcast).

The flashpoint, though, came midway through the contest. Anthony Davis, now wearing Dallas blue, delivered what appeared to be a hard shove during a physical sequence in the paint. The refs let the play roll. Cameras immediately caught James turning toward the officials in disbelief, signaling for a whistle that never arrived.

That reaction sparked the postgame conversation, especially given AD’s blockbuster February 2025 trade that sent him to Dallas for Luka Doncic. James finished with 13-5-7 in 34 minutes. Davis posted 12-5-5 in 28.

What LeBron James Said About Austin Reaves After Lakers-Mavericks Game

In a game packed with subplots, from Anthony Davis’ return to LA to Doncic battling his former team again, guard Austin Reaves was outstanding.

And the performance hit extra hard because it came in an NBA Cup game the Lakers had to have. They kept rolling, grabbing their sixth straight win. Reaves kept elevating, stacking star-level numbers like there’s no tomorrow.

That set up the moment everyone clipped afterward: LeBron James’ message, who also spoke about fitting in with the Lakers. When asked what still surprises him about Reaves, James alluded,

“Nothing. Nothing. I told y’all. How long ago did I tell you all, AR can [expletive] play ball? … It’s nothing [new]. AR, he’s great.”

Hard to argue. Reaves did drop 38 on 12-of-15 shooting against Dallas and continues to carry All-Star weight. He’s averaging 28.5 points, 5.9 boards, and 6.7 assists through 15 games, fueling a 14-4 Lakers start. Next up: New Orleans on Sunday.
