The New York Yankees-New York Mets rivalry doesn’t need extra fuel. However, when Aaron Boone starts joking about Juan Soto, the New York baseball drama writes itself. Soto’s move to Queens in December 2024 still echoes across the city after he chose the Mets over a massive Yankees offer.

It was one of the most shocking free-agency twists in recent MLB history. Soto inked a 15-year, $765M deal with the Mets, backed by owner Steve Cohen and his long-term “dynasty” vision. The Yankees reportedly countered with a 16-year, $760M proposal, but the 27-year-old ultimately took his power bat across town. This lands amid Boone’s frustration over Ryan McMahon’s error.

Now comes the latest jab. During a March 9, 2026, appearance on the WFAN podcast, Boone was asked by host Evan Roberts if Juan Soto’s choosing the Mets still bothered him. The Yanks manager flipped the question into a playful dig aimed at the Mets-fan host.

“I think it still bothers him.”

Juan Soto’s move paid off immediately, though. In 2025, he smashed 43 home runs and became the first Mets player to post a 40 HR / 20 SB / 100 RBI / 100 walk season. The moment, however, added another chapter to Boone’s ongoing banter about the Dominican player, who he previously joked looked “terrible” wearing Mets colors during a 2025 spring training reunion.

Soto is clearly having a blast at the World Baseball Classic. The slugger helped power the Dominican Republic national baseball team to a 12-1 mercy-rule win over the Netherlands national baseball team. This gave the squad extra rest and plenty of good vibes in the clubhouse.

During a postgame chat on MLB Network with Siera Santos, he reflected on the teams he’s loved playing for most. He shouted out his 2019 run with the Washington Nationals and his 2024 season with the New York Yankees while praising the current Dominican roster.

As noted on March 8, 2026, by Federico O’Donnell, Juan Soto didn’t mention the New York Mets at all. Considering his lone season in Queens ended with a brutal final-day playoff miss, that omission might not sit well with Mets fans heading into 2026.
