Nathan Martin, a high school coach, is the latest American hero to complete an incredible feat. The 36-year-old American coach and runner chased down Kenya’s Michael Kamau in the final strides.

Matthew Richtman was the last American to win the Los Angeles Marathon before Martin. That was last year, and he became the first American man to win the race in 31 years.

The 2026 Los Angeles Marathon began at Dodger Stadium and ended in Century City with a thrilling finish in the men’s pro race. The 26.2-mile Los Angeles Marathon from Dodger Stadium to Century City included a dramatic men’s finish. It broke the heart of one man and showed the sheer determination of another.

In the women’s race, Kenyan Priscah Cherono ran away with victory. Kenya almost swept both races, but Nathan Martin was not going to let that happen.

Running a marathon is not for the faint of heart. Many people have collapsed, and some have even died as a result of trying to complete one.

For Nathan Martin, all he saw was an opportunity and glory in front of him.

Martin chased down a fading Michael Kamau of Kenya to win the men’s race by -00:01. It was what marathon officials called the closest finish the event has ever seen. Martin’s time was 2:11:16.50, technically the same as Kamau’s. Enyew Nigat of Ethiopia was third with a time of 2:14:22.22.

Video and pictures show Michael Kamau desperately trying to stick his hands out to win, but it was too late. Martin, a 36-year-old high school cross-country coach, trailed from the start at Dodger Stadium and past such landmarks as the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

The home stretch is where he decided to make his move.

“I was digging pretty deep,” said Martin, per the Los Angeles Daily News. “I was in the hurt locker for sure.”
