The Texas Longhorns were as back as they ever been as they got ever so close to getting to the National Championship during the 2023-2024 season.

If they plan on getting back there next year, they will likely have to do so without two players from this squad.

Texas Longhorns star running back Jonathon Brooks and defensive tackle Byron Murphy II announced on Wednesday that they would be declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported news of both departures.

Brooks, a third-year running back, racked up 18 total touchdowns in 22 games during his Texas career. He was having a breakout 2023 season before tearing his ACL in the Longhorns’ win over TCU in November. He is expected to be cleared to play by training camp in July.

He rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns on 187 carries this past season.

Murphy declared his intentions on social media after helping Texas reach the College Football Playoff. He finished his time at Texas with 70 total tackles and 8 sacks in just 39 games. Murphy took home several honors including Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2021.

He logged 29 tackles (8.5 for loss) and five sacks while earning first-team All-Big 12 recognition this season.
