The Boston Red Sox franchise is reeling from the tragic loss of a player and now his wife.

Stacy Wakefield, the widow of former Red Sox knuckleball pitcher Tim Wakefield, died Tuesday just a mere five months after her husband tragically passed away.

Tim, notorious for his knuckleball during his 19-year career, died in October after a battle with brain cancer. Unfortunately, Stacy was also battling cancer.

“It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts,” the Wakefield family said in a statement. “She was surrounded by her family and dear friends, as well as her wonderful caretakers and nurses. The loss is unimaginable, especially in the wake of losing Tim just under five months ago. Our hearts are beyond broken.

At the time of his illness, Tim Wakefield was caring for his wife after her diagnosis.

Stacy and Tim are survived by their children, Trevor and Brianna.

Stacy worked alongside her husband to raise for multiple charitable groups, including the Red Sox Foundation.

Over his 19-year career with the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates, Wakefield went 200-180 with a 4.41 ERA and 2,156 strikeouts. His 17 seasons with the Red Sox are the most in team history among pitchers. He still holds all-time Red Sox records with 430 starts and 3,006 innings pitched.

Following his retirement in 2011, Wakefield joined NESN’s pregame and postgame coverage of Red Sox games. Last season, he was added to the booth as a color commentator.

As a couple, they also worked with The Jimmy Fund, raising funds for the childhood cancer charity and visiting pediatric cancer patients at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

We send our thoughts and prayers to the Wakefield family.
