Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: Golden Glove All-Star Garners Interest From AL East Rival

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy’s name has surfaced in the trade rumors. While Murphy has been solid this season, hitting 13 home runs with a .787 OPS, the Braves may be open to a deal thanks to the rise of young catcher Drake Baldwin.
The Braves are going through a disastrous season, but they have a good opportunity to get a strong prospect in return for Murphy. According to reports, the Tampa Bay Rays have shown real interest in trading for Murphy and might offer middle infielder Carson Williams, or fifth-ranked prospect Tre Morgan, to get the deal done.
“He’s still a solid catcher who can help a team win, but the Atlanta Braves may have stumbled upon a better and cheaper player in Baldwin, which could make Murphy redundant on the roster,” Henry Palatella wrote in his column.

The Rays are 50-45 in the AL East standings and currently hold one of the AL Wild Card spots. They are still trailing the Marlins, Mets, and Phillies.
Sean Murphy’s Trade Could Be A Win-Win Situation For Both The Atlanta Braves And Tampa Bay

A potential trade involving Sean Murphy could be a win-win for both the Braves and the Rays. Atlanta might not get a massive return. Yet, Murphy’s value on both sides of the ball makes him a strong trade chip.
Murphy’s 116 wRC+ ranks sixth among catchers with 200+ at-bats. His impressive defensive metrics, including 75th percentile framing and 85th percentile blocking, make him more than just a bat.
The Atlanta Braves need a revamp after a nightmarish season. Getting a few top prospects could help them return to competing in 2026.
On the other hand, Tampa Bay would finally get some stability at catcher. Murphy has a six-year deal through 2029, making him a rare long-term solution at a key position. With Gold Glove-level defense and consistent offensive production, Murphy would bring reliability to a Rays team that has shuffled through backstops in recent years.
